PROVERBS




Chapter 1


The use of the proverbs given by Solomon (1:1-6) An exhortation to fear God, believe His word, and obey your parents (1:7-9) To avoid the enticings of sinners (1:10-19) Wisdom complains that she is scorned (1:20-23) She threatens those who despise her (1:24-33)

Chapter 2


Wisdom promises godliness to her children (2:1-9) Safety from evil company (2:10-19) And direction in good ways (2:20-22)

Chapter 3


An exhortation to obedience (3:1) To faith (3:5-6) To humility (3:7-8) To devotion (3:9-10) To patience (3:11-12) The happy gain of wisdom (3:13-18) The power (3:19-20) And the benefits of wisdom (3:21-26) An exhortation to charity (3:27-29) Peaceableness (3:30) And contentment (3:31-32) The cursed state of the wicked (3:33-35)

Chapter 4


Solomon, to persuade obedience (4:1-2) Shows the instruction he had from his parents (4:3-4) To be diligent in seeking wisdom (4:5-13) And to shun the path of the wicked (4:14-19) He exhorts to faith (4:20-22) And keep your heart holy (4:23-27)

Chapter 5


Solomon exhorts to the study of wisdom (5:1-2) He shows the folly of adultery and riot (5:3-14) He exhorts to contentment, and chastity. Be faithful to your spouse (5:15-21) The wicked are overtaken by their own sins (5:22-23)

Chapter 6


Warning against guaranteeing a friend's liabilities (6:1-5) Warning against being lazy (6:6-11) And willful mischief-making (6:12-15) The Seven deadly sins that are hateful to God (6:16-19) The blessings of obedience (6:20-24) Warning against committing adultery, and the damage done by lawlessness (6:25-35)

Chapter 7


Solomon reasons for a sincere familiarity with wisdom (7:1-5) In an example which he has known (7:6-9) He shows the cunning of a harlot (7:10-21) And the desperate simplicity of her young victim (7:22-23) He pleads for abstaining from such wickedness (7:24-27)

Chapter 8


The fame (8:1-5) And evidence of wisdom (8:6-9) The excellency (8:10-11) The nature (8:12-14) The power (8:15-17) The riches (8:18-21) And the eternity of wisdom (8:22-31) Wisdom is to be desired for the blessedness it brings (8:32-36)

Chapter 9


The discipline (9:1-3) And doctrine of wisdom (9:4-12) The custom and error of a foolish women (9:13-18)

ECCLESIASTES




Chapter 1


The preacher shows that all human courses are vain: (1:1-3) Because the whole creation is restless (1:4-8) Nothing new is brought forth, and all old things are forgotten (1:9-11) And because he has found the same in making studies of wisdom (1:12-18)

Chapter 2


The vanity of human courses in the works of pleasure (2:1-3) Great works are in vain (2:4-11) Though the wise be better than the fool, yet life for both has one final event (2:12-17) The vanity of human labor, in leaving its fruits to someone whose course is unknown (2:18-23) Nothing is better than joy in our labor, but the capacity for that is God's gift (2:24-26)

Chapter 3


There is time for everything (3:1-10) There is an excellency in God's works (3:11-15) God shall judge the righteous and the wicked (3:16-22)

Chapter 4


Vanity is increased by oppression (4:1-3) By envy, by idleness (4:4-6) By covetousness (4:7-8) By loneliness (4:9-12) By willfulness (4:13-16)

Chapter 5


Vanities in divine service (5:1-7) Wealth does not satisfy (5:8-12) Wealth brings difficulties (5:13-17) Wealth is ultimately the gift of God (5:18-20)

Chapter 6


The vanity of riches without use (6:1-2) Of children (6:3-5) And old age without riches (6:6-8) The vanity of sight and wandering desires (6:9-10) The conclusion of vanities (6:11-12)

Chapter 7


Remedies against vanity are a good name (7:1) Humility (7:2-6) Patience (7:7-10) Wisdom (7:11-22) The difficulty of getting wisdom (7:23-29)

Chapter 8


Kings are greatly to be respected (8:1-5) The divine providence is to be observed (8:6-11) It is better with the godly in adversity, than with the wicked in prosperity (8:12-15) The work of God is unsearchable (8:16-17)

Chapter 9


Similar things happen to the good and bad (9:1-3) There is a necessity for death to men (9:4-6) Comfort is all their portion in this life (9:7-10) God's providence rules over all (9:11-12) Wisdom is better than strength (9:13-18)

Chapter 10


Observations of wisdom and folly (10:1-15) Of riot, slothfulness, and money (10:16-19) Men's thoughts of kings ought to be reverent (10:20)

Chapter 11


Directions for charity (11:1-6) Death in life (11:7-8) And, in the days of youth, the day of judgment are to be considered (11:9-10)

Chapter 12


The creator is to be remembered in youth (12:1-7) The preacher's concern is to edify the people (12:8-12) The fear of God is the chief antidote of vanity (12:13-14)

The church's love for Christ (1:1-4) She confesses her deformity (1:5-6) And prays to be directed to His flock (1:7) Christ directs her to the shepherds' tents (1:8) And showing His love to her (1:9-10) Gives her gracious promises (1:11) The church and Christ praise one another (1:12-17)

The mutual love of Christ and His church (2:1-7) The hope (2:8-9) And calling of the church (2:10-13) Christ's care of the church (2:14-15) The profession of the church, her faith and hope (2:16-17)

The fight and victory of the church in temptation (3:1-5) The church glories in Christ (3:6-11)

Christ sets forth the graces of the church (4:1-7) He shows His love to her (4:8-15) The church prays to be made fit for His presence (4:16)

The church professes her faith in Christ (6:1-3) Christ shows the graces of the church (6:4-9) And His love toward her (6:10-13)

A further description of the church's graces (7:1-9) The church professes her faith and desire (7:10-13)

Chapter 8


The love of the church for Christ (8:1-5) The strength of love (8:6-7) The calling of the Gentiles (8:8-13) The church prays for Christ's coming (8:14)
